I tend to listen to a little bit of classical before studying. It seems to focus me well.

My strategies are:

*setting aside a couple of hours each day.
*taking enough breaks to keep me from becoming bored and frustrated.
* make lots of flashcards.

I am a junior and have a 4.0.  I was also the valedictorian of my high school.  I'm not saying this to brag; I'm just showing validity to my post.

Firstly, I always attend class.  There has been about two or three classes/labs I have missed in two years.  One was when I was applying for a job, and another was for a lab when I had already completed the assignment.

Secondly, I always do my homework.  It makes keeping up with the professor much easier.  It also makes studying for tests much quicker.  If you don't understand something in the homework, get help from a friend or go to the professor's office hours.

Make sure to eat well (at least don't eat tons of junk foods), get at least 6-7 (I prefer 8) hours of sleep per day, and try to exercise some throughout the week.  If your body is not in good condition, your mind won't function well either.

Start studying at least a few days before the test (3 or 4 is good... just study about 30 mins. or a couple of hours a day, depending on difficulty/amount of material).  When you study, I like either silence or calm, quiet music.  The point is to be able to focus as much as possible on the material.  If you find your mind wandering to music or other distractions, get away from them or turn the music off.  You MUST be focused on what you are studying.

I usually just study the study guides teachers give for the test, then notes.  If I don't understand something in my notes, I look in the textbook.  If I still don't understand, I may try something online.

Also, don't spend the same amount of time studying each topic.  Just skim over and work an example or two of topics that you know well.  Spend more time on the topics you don't understand.  This will make your studying time more efficient.

That's most of what I can think of now.  If you have any questions, send me a private message.  Hope this helps you get better grades!

I keep all my previous tests.  My final exam is cumulative so that is a great way to study.  I am just always short for time with all the other busy stuff I have to do/

Studying was never really my thing in highschool, but in college it is pretty much mandatory. Studying really differs with subject areas as well. If you are studying using notes, rewrite the notes. Act like your going to make a cheat sheet and get the most important info down on the least amount of space. If you do this about 2 times you will know the info by heart. It is easiest to do this with factual information. Check out this site for some cool tips on how to get better grades. I personally ordered the program and raised my GPA from a 2.8 at a community college to a 3.9 overall at a senior college.

During the school year:

1. Attend your lectures!
2. Do all the assigned work.
3. You should review all the materials throughout the school year. The week before finals, you should just relax. (yes, I score 100% on most of my finals, except for all the humanities which cannot really be studied for)

Before the term begins:
1. Get your textbooks a month early. Go through the entire text book, writing summaries of each chapter in your own words. Do some practice problems too, it's highly recommended.
During the summer/winter breaks, I generally work from 8pm-1am, and from 6:30am-8:30 am. You can spend the rest of the time to have fun! I'd say 4-6 hours per day during the break and you'll have a lot of free time during the school year.

1. Always write lecture notes in YOUR OWN WORDS, and make them very CONCISE. Never copy from the board/book exactly.
2. Be creative - don't just write text, but also draw some pictures and diagrams, whichever makes more sense.

Make your notebook an artwork - each page should look distinctly and the looks should suit the content. If you can focus in class 100% and make good notes, then you don't really need to study off the class (unless it's math or something similar, requiring practice).
