is the canon powershot S5 IS a good camera?  i know it isn't a SLR camera like i want but that is what my mom has and is, reluctantly, allowing me to use.  i helped pay for it so i think i should be able to use it too.  but anyway, good camera or no?

Rule of thumb if its a Canon its good.  The S5IS is a very nice camera for what it is, its reliable, easy to use, and the picture quality is quite good for the price.

I'm considering purchasing one of these for myself soon, too. I've heard nothing but good stuff about it. Even though it's not an DSLR, there's still more you could do with it than many other point and shoot cameras. With the S5 you can attach certain extra lenses to the body, such as a macro, fish eye, telephoto, and a wide angle one. Tthat's the main reason I'm considering that over other things. Since I'm not really ready to go spend the money on a DSLR yet, yet I still want more control over it than the camera that I'm currently using.

As far as point and shoots go, thats about as good as it gets.

I havent been able to use one yet, but from what I read, and can see, it looks like you are nearing really close to a D-SLR, and it gives you alot of control.

Still, if you are going to be taking alot of photos, you should buy a D-SLR. The Nikon D40 is an excellent camera, and can be bought on eBay for under $400.
