Ok well I'm going to a community college right now, and may (or may not, haven't decided yet) transfer to a 4 year school after I get my associates degree.

Well I just looked up one university (forgot the name) and it said that it would not accept credits from another school that were gotten over 10 years ago.

Is this the norm for colleges??? I mean, do most colleges have the same policy???

The reason I ask is, I may just get a job after getting my associates degree and then get a job for a few years to get some work experience. If I ever decide to get a bachelors degree from a 4 year school, I wanna know if there's a time limit to how long my credits will be transferable

so, do most colleges have the same policy???

I would say so since things change, you know? And how much would you remember after 10+ years?

You might want to check several different colleges just to see if any of them differ.

Are any of your credits too old to transfer? Credits earned more than seven years ago may not qualify for transfer.

Sounds like 7 is the magic number. Some might accept them if they're a bit older but I'd use 7 instead of 10 just to be safe. You might want to check with the schools you might be interested in, just so you can be sure which ones will accept what.

well all the ones in my area do, but I guess I'll have to go to a bigger school sooner rather then later

So that'd only cover a handful of colleges in your area, that doesn't even touch on ones in other states. Whether your credits transfer or not would depend upon what classes you took. When I talked to a college admissions advisor a year ago, I asked her about transferring credits and she didn't have a problem with it. All she said was to make sure that I don't take too many specialized courses because they might not be able to match them up with anything they (or other schools) offer.

I also think the quality of the community college in question might have something to do with it. I'm transferring to another school but was worried that I just wasn't ready for it yet so I talked to someone at the school about it and he actually suggested that I transfer to a community college. He said that he doesn't like most community colleges but that some are actually quite good and named one, in particular, that he felt had great classes that were very similar to the ones offered at said four year school (and would transfer into his school when I decided to come).

On top of that, I think the four year school matters, too. Some, for example, will make deals with others in which they agree to take one another's credits without question. I imagine that means some are snobby and will not only reject community college credits but even some four year school credits.

It's all really whacky, I don't think schools should be able to be like that which is why it's good that schools are actually being confronted about it in PA. Some are now agreeing to not pick and choose anymore which will be nice.
