You can't say anything that will take the pain away.  You can just offer your condolences, and tell him that he can call you if he needs any kind of help or the like.  But since he has a place to stay, that they'll make sure he eats, and the like.

So just offer your apologies, that's teh best you can really do.

I agree. You can buy flowers for the funeral and be there for him (trust me, that helps- it did when my grandma died and one of my old friends did that).
