If your throat is hurting light the bowl and get the lighter off as soon as its cherried, then use the shotgun to clear the pipe and get some cool air in there (cool air=less throat hurts)

If you use that tip with a bubbler (cools smoke/filters out nasty bits that hurts your lungs) you shouldn't have much a problem.

When you're inhaling, don't use your diaphragm. First, start with your mouth cavity very small, tounge blocking your air passage, with your lips around the pipe. Light the flame, and drop your jaw, but keep your lips around the pipe. You've just made the space in your mouth cavity much bigger. The air is pulled through the pipe into your MOUTH (read: not your lungs). Once it's here, breathe in through your mouth. You'll pull that mouthful of smoke down with the air.
