I can catch some things in German, maybe follow a chunk of a basic conversation understanding half but they're not that close.  They're farther apart than Spanish and Porteguese or (I've been told) Russian and Ukranian.  The dialect of 12th century German that Yiddish evolved from is much further south than the dialect standard German is based off.  German also has a grammar based off Latin (this is why the verb is at the end of the sentence) while Yiddish maintains a more Germanic word order (like the German dialects). Yiddish also has a lot of Hebrew thrown in (and some Polish and Latin too) which German doesn't and the words are often doublets, so you'll have something like majority= rov (Hebrew) and merheit (German) or boy= yingl (from old German but different than modern German) or lakashke (Polish??) or Bukher (Hebrew).  SO, I can often pick up more than a German speaker could of Yiddish but I don't speak German.  I picked up a tiny tiny amount from family than speaks it though so I can manage a few phrases.  I'd say just from guessing looking at a German newspaper (I know the spelling system) 45% of the words in Yiddish have a close "cousin" in German if you change the vowels a lot, IE the German word for house is pronounced the same as English while the Yiddish word is hoyz (oy as in boy, z like English Z) or hous (like whose with the h missing) depending on dialect.
They are really the same word but just have different vowels due to the great vowel shift that Yiddish never underwent.

Yiddish (written like German IE not in the Hebrew alphabet):  ich ken redn yidish un ikh ken oych a bislele duetsch.  ober sof-kol-sof- mein yidish is a sakh mer besser (be-emes a toysnt mol besser).  (I speak Yiddish and I also know a tiny amount of German.  But in the end my Yiddish is a lot better, actually a thousand times better).

German (excuse spelling): ich ken a bischn duetsch shprechn (I can speak a little German).
