I didn't bring that up, somebody else did and I was commenting on that.

You know, even if you say you don't, you'd make a bigger deal out of a person being shot for a stupid reason than of a horse being shot because it's leg is broken, right?

That would be from your original post.

What you said where you quoted yourself isn't true.

So you've never heard of an idiot savant?

No? No, I don't think I should be against spaying and neutering.

So you're in favor of sterlizing mentally retarded folks, then?

No, because retarded people don't *usually produce more retarded people.

Except that many disorders that lead to mental retardation originate in a person's genes, so there's a healthy chance that it could be passed on. Not to mention that some mentally retarded people are liable to have kids that will likely just end up in an overcrowded social services system...kind of like the dogs euthanized in the overcrowded shelters.

Wait, are we debating whether we should sterilise retards? Why? I think it's quite obvious that sterilisation of the genetically unfit is the way to go.

I would kill a man to protect an upland gorilla of which there are only three hundred living. These animals naturally develop rudimentary sign language and koko learned american sign fluently and invented signs for things they didnt teach her and she exhibited full emotional intelligence as well. Watch the koko documentary and tell me she lacks humanity.

The soul. The idea that every human being has this thing called a soul that sets us apart from animals. You can't kill a human because even if it is retarded it has a should in it that you can't simply destroy. That should has feelings, a right to life, and a desire to exist in a way that animals do not. Animals are driven by instinct, not by a soul, so it's fine to eat them for dinner just because the Colonel makes 'em finger lickin' good.

That's not my view, btw. It's just what I guess a lot of people would argue. Personally I think that's just an elaborate excuse for specism based on centuries of myth.

It's harder to hurt/kill your own kind or creatures that are close to you than it is to hurt or kill the Other animals. Probably if you were a horse you'd care less about killing people than horses...

There's a whole long theory about what kinds animals people chose to eat and how that's related to how closely the animal relates to them (not how closely they are related genetically).... but I don't remember who's theory it is or the details so I won't go into it.

That is exactly what the theory is trying to explain.

No matter how intellectual we are, we are emotional beings. In fact, I'd argue that anyone without emotion has no room to call themself intellectual, or even truly human. If you took emotion out and looked at the world through a purely logical lense, then we should value some animals over our children, regardless of their mental capabilities save the upper percentiles of intelligence. Of course, that would make for a much stronger race, but... it's just not human.

I am offended on so many levels you couldn't count them with a damn thermometer.

Also a hallmark of intellectualism is self-awareness, that is being able to recognise sociopathy when suggesting it.

THE FUCKING GORILLA HAS SELF AWARENESS WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY.

It would be easier for me to kill a human than to kill Koko the gorilla I mean if you watch that documentary you will see what I mean.

A "soul", lol, Koko has self-awareness, LANGUAGE, full "human" emotion, she's very clearly no more "instinctual" than we are. She has a pet cat that she cares for perfectly well, and she is horribly upset when the cat leaves the compound and is hit by a vehicle. She comprehends that her cat is dead without even seeing the dead cat, but instead because the woman that raised her TOLD her in SIGN LANGUAGE, which Koko is FLUENT in.

I mean basically Koko, once grown, was a HUMAN BEING in every way but appearance. In fact, Koko was smarter than various people I've known over the years, and I'd be better friends with Koko than most of you. Plus koko can be my partner in crime.

"OPEN THAT DOOR KOKO" (she understands SPOKEN english, the only reason she can't SPEAK it is because her species literally doesn't have the vocal capabilities).

Fuck all you fagots that want to say Koko is less than a human. If more people could be like Koko I could make a lot more money.

I don't know. I agree with a lot of the things said here. I certainly agree that biologically, we feel the need to preserve our own species over another. Sentience/intelligence/etc is also a good argument, but as several people have brought up the matter of mentally retarded people, perhaps it's more about having the potential to develop those kind of cognitive abilities.
It also has something to do with being able to relate to the creature in question. If, as someone else has stated, I had a conversation with a frog, I'd be more sad if it died than if I human I didn't know died.

I guess we just ignore Koko the sign languaging self-aware emotional and intelligent gorilla that literally has a fluent understand of the english language and American Sign and is basically a human that looks like a really strong monster.
