I currently have 2 computers.  One is a desktop and has much more power in terms of CPU, RAM, Video, etc.  I do use it for gaming, so I would like to use it in my college dorm.  However, I also have a laptop I'd like to use so I can use it on the go, it's just that there is less power for computing, it's not as easy to see on the screen.

Has anyone ever done this before?  I would like to bring both but would like to see if anyone would think that I shouldn't bring both.

I do the exact same thing. I have a desktop I use for gaming that sits at my house, but when I travel, go to my dad's or my boyfriend's house I bring my laptop because it's much more portable. I think you should take both; it's really nice to have both.

just bring the desktop, unless you think you REALLY need the laptop

I'd definitely recommend bringing the laptop at least. That way you can bring it to work at the library, or if you have some sort of group project you can bring it with. A lot of people even bring their laptops to lectures to take notes on. If you think the screens too small, you can get a monitor that you can plug the laptop into.

Personally I use a laptop at school, but I use it as a desktop.  In two years of college I think it has left my room twice for school-related work.  If it were me I would just take one, but if you think you will be doing alot of on-the-go computing then I guess taking both isn't going to hurt anything.

I would bring a desktop.  I can't think of any situations where you would absolutely need a laptop with you.

keep in mind: a laptop is a lot easier for someone to steal then a desktop.

Go the first couple of weeks without the laptop with you at school, and if you think you may use it, go home and bring it back. I have had a few friends who have used both.  It's more of a personal preference thing.

you only need one, and your best choice would be the laptop, that way you can take it anywhere while you are on campus, it makes studying and working on projects way easier
you can always transfer all of your file to you laptop.
