OK, I'm looking through at free OSX software.

Basically i have taken my Mac back to OSX after it's time as an Ubuntu machine and I'm looking at getting it working just how i would like. I want your suggestions for the best free Mac software out there.

It doesn't have to be open-source, although always nice.

These can be productivity apps, music editing, web browsers, whatever.

Hopefully if we get enough this could turn into a nice little list for Mac users.

Audacity - Music/audio editing. Free download (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) and open source.
Coco View - Image organising. Free download (http://www.stalkingwolf.net/software/cocoviewx/)
Growl - Notification, brilliant app. Free download (http://growl.info/)
Open Office - Word processing/spreadsheets etc. Free open source. (http://www.openoffice.org/)
Adium - Instant messenger. Free download. (http://www.adiumx.com
Firefox - Web browser, brilliant. Free download. (http://getfirefox.com
Caffeine - Screen light app. Free (http://osx.iusethis.com/app/caffeine)
Colloquy - IRC client. Free download (http://colloquy.info)
Transmission - Bittorrent client.(http://transmissionbt.com)

That's basically the list of free software I use on my Mac. I rarely use stuff you have to pay for if there's a good alternative, and OS X is pretty good for having little apps for certain uses. I definitely recommend Growl, as it works with loads of apps. By no means a definitive list, I'll add more if I come to think of them.

As a quick note, iMovie and iPohoto do not count as free. They are part of iLife which is not free software, it is pay for software that happens to come with new Macs. So you either have this anyway which means you don't need it as part of the list, or its not free and doesn't qualify to be on the list.

Thanks for your suggestions so far though, hadn't heard of a couple of those.

I use Camino browser sometimes.
- Google Earth
- Alarm Clock - Yep, thats the name of it. Its a really cool program that plays music at a time you set and even wakes your Mac up from sleep. I use it as my primary alarm clock.
- Frostwire for Music downloading

What version of OS X do you use?

I'm on 10.4, and if this list is every going to be any good, i would expect all the apps to be 10.4 and above and available as a universal binary.

i like iwork. you have to pay for it thou, but it's all worth it.
and in case you like making a mindmap, MindNod is quite a good freeware.
