If they happened to see it, you could get in trouble, because that's paraphernalia.
In VA, that's a charge.

Even with lots of resin built up in it, it will usually get through. I'm 3 for 3 right now, I think they are more concerned with carry-on so check it and you should be good to go.
Edit: I've only tried this with domestic flights in the US so far, but I wouldn't worry too much. As MushroomSatsujin mentioned, you're better off bringing a wooden or glass/pyrex bowl than a metal one.

If you have a pipe and it has been used to smoke illegal substances it constitutes drug paraphernalia and TSA can fuck you for it. Thankfully airport security is designed to screen for people trying to blow up planes or (on rare occasions) people trying to move large amounts of hard drugs. No one really cares about a pipe used for weed, and there aren't a lot of measures in place to stop you from flying with one. I fly with my pipe all the time; it's glass, so I can just pocket it and walk through security. Problem solved.
