There's quite a big chance with videos. I nearly downloaded something earlier but then I realised it looked a bit fishy so I stopped it.

Also, don't use Windows Media player or the like to play it. Use something like MPC or MPlayer. Edit: If those won't play it, I don't trust it, assuming you have the basic codecs, which you should. 
Yep, that's the best way to make sure. Also make sure your anti-virus is up-to-date. You can also use a program like VLC Player to view the video as well. 
I've always found VLC to have inferior video playback quality compared with MPlayer personally, especially under linux. Also, the options in VLC are hard to access properly. MPC only works on Windows, but imo it's the best one. Plenty of rendering options and filter options, and all sorted out into the proper places. MPlayer is excellent for pure keyboard control or "set and forget" options. It's very hard to edit options on it on the fly though, seeing as it's console based. It loads and plays very fast though.
