How can you tell if a friend is jealous of you or something that you want to do? I told my friend about something that I might want to do for school, and he blew up at me like I was talking about doing drugs or something.

Exactly. Sometimes it's hard to tell. Maybe ask them if it bothers them rather than if it makes them jealous.
