I believe that they were testing personality traits and trying to determine what led to abusive prison situations.

Hold on let me check here. Ill edit

Alright ya.  From wikipedia "Zimbardo and his team set out to test the idea that the inherent personality traits of prisoners and guards were key to understanding abusive prison situations".

It was also meant to demonstrate how people will conform their behavior to fit a societal norm or standard of behavior...such as with a prisoner-guard relationship.

Yes, simply it was to show how people psychologically change when given uniforms(the nice ones become guards and turn into mean tyrannical people, while the  other group of normal or means ones become the prisoners and turn "weak" and submit to the authority, all because of uniform and  the change of tone of voice, and looks.), or when they sense authority.
Also how peer pressure builds up and they always submit to peer pressure.

It was basically an environment set up to witness how people behave to and in authority. Participants were assigned either prisoner or enforcer and the researcher watched as these people actually acted like their roles given to them. However, it was stopped after 14 days as people were taking it too seriously and it was mentally wrong.

Aim: To investigate how readily people would conform to the roles of guard and prisoner in a role-playing exercise that simulated prison life.

Zimbardo (1973) was interested in finding out whether the brutality reported among guards in American Prisons was due to the sadistic personalities of the guards or had more to do with the prison environment.
