I've literally been trying to figure these problems out all night...not working! Please help, I suck at math =(

1) a 6-ft. person standing 25-ft. from a street light casts a shadow of 8-ft. What is the height of the street light?

2) Use the quadratic formula to solve: -72.5= 8t-(5/8t^2)

3) A plane lands with a speed of 101.7 m/s and can accelerate at a maximum rate of -4.2 m/s^2 as it comes to rest. From the instant the plane touches the runway, what is the minimum time needed before it can come to rest? Answer in units of 's'.

PLEASE help...and maybe show an explanation on how the problems are solved!

a) it's simple trig.

draw a digram.

so the shadow is 8 and the distance is 25 so 8 + 25 = 33

so the angle arctan(6/8)

so basically streetlight = 33 x 6/8

b)multiply across by 8. get everything on one side equal to 0. use quadratic formula.

c)101.7/4.2 basically (just think about it ok).

v = u + at
0 = 101.7 - 4.2t
t = 101.7/4.2

Wow, you make it sound so complicated...

Integral 0 to t (-4.2)dt -101.7= 0   (applying relations between acceleration and velocity)
-4.2t - 101.7 = 0
t = 101.7/4.2

If you're going to do physics, always use calculus if possible, else you'll have to relearn everything as you get higher up in physics.
