If they were proud of where they lived they fly the flag of the united states.
What if they aren't proud of the USA itself but only one part of it.

I see, daily, people flying the Puerto Rican flag. As you know it's a commonwealth of the USA. Why don't they fly the American flag? I don't know.

I find that it makes more sense to fly the Confederate flag in the SOUTH than flying the Puerto Rican flag outside of Puerto Rico.

Thats ironic given the Confederacy was not so proud of the U.S. to begin with.
They disagreed with the North. They were part of the USA as much as the North was.

I know pelenty of people that fly the confederate flag, its usually a sign of like rebelion or pride of where they grew up. Its just like with anything else if its done to be racist then id think it was racists if not then im fine with it.

no

even though I understand both sides of the argument in regards to the flag as a symbol of racism, the flag is pretty much irrelevant to me

so I've never cared enough to get into it

I just assume people would be smart enough to find other ways to express such beliefs, and keep it moving

maybe. but since the confederacy SEPERATED itself from the US then its more like a flag to say fuck you to the US.

so it may or may not be racist but its still MORE offensive to the UNITED states because it says "im not part of you fucking country" even more than a puerto rican flag which is like flying and irish flag to speak of where you come from.

It COULD be that you're proud of your Southernness OR that you want to succeed from the US. The Irish flag or the Rican flag could indicate pride OR supremacy also. They could, easily, say that "IRELAND IS BETTER THAN THE USA" or "VIVA LA PUERTO RICO. CON(with a sqiggly)O EL ESTADOS UNIDOS".

Supremacy?I wasn't talking about SUPREMACY. I was talking about SEPARATISM. The south flag is about separatism. You gonna deny that?

Ireland and Puerto Rico are already DIFFERENT countries than the US.

Puerto Rico isn't a country, how do you think they're all legally coming over here?

Its a commonwealth. An associate free state. It has its own government, Its own flag.

In 1947, the U.S. granted Puerto Ricans the right to democratically elect their own governor. Luis Muñoz Marín was elected during the 1948 general elections, becoming the first popularly-elected governor of Puerto Rico. In 1950, the Truman Administration allowed for a democratic referendum in Puerto Rico to determine whether Puerto Ricans desired to draft their own local constitution.[16] A local constitution was approved by a Constitutional Convention on February 6, 1952, ratified by the U.S. Congress, approved by President Truman on July 3 of that year, and proclaimed by Gov. Muñoz Marín on July 25, 1952, the anniversary of the 1898 arrival of U.S. troops. Puerto Rico adopted the name of Estado Libre Asociado (literally translated as "Free Associated State"), officially translated into English as Commonwealth, for its body politic.

com·mon·wealth /ˈkɒmənˌwɛlθ/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[kom-uhn-welth] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
-noun 1. (initial capital letter) a group of sovereign states and their dependencies associated by their own choice and linked with common objectives and interests: the British Commonwealth.
2. the Commonwealth. Commonwealth of Nations.
3. (initial capital letter) a federation of states: the Commonwealth of Australia.
4. (initial capital letter) a self-governing territory associated with the U.S.: official designation of Puerto Rico.

Its a VERY different "state" than California or Gerogia.

India and Pakistan are part of the Briitish commonwealth. They ae still different than Britain. An Indian flying his flag is only referring to his country.

A Puerto Rican is only referring to his self-governing territory.

When bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd wave the Confederate flag, there's no beef because they're just proud of being a southern rock band, reppin' some southern hospitality. However, the overwhelming majority of people that I've met that have the confederate flag emblem on their pickups or hats almost always have bigoted feelings towards those of...   well any race that is non-white.

As I originally said, I don't think that it is by itself a racist symbol. There are things to be admired of the south, such as the Southern hospitality (that is, they're hospitable to you if you're white!). However, it is pretty well known that there is still much racial tension in many Southern states, and to deny that the flag never has racial connotations to it is absurd.

Yes, but Puerto Rico still gets US benefits and they are considered citizens of the US at birth.

India and Pakistan are part of Britain? I thought India became independent in 1947 and that Pakistan became its own country too. Hmmmm...

And what about Operation Bootstrap? The US felt like fixing up and modernizing Puerto Rico.

Yeah but they are not the same state as a southern state.

India and Pakistan are part of Britain?
They are part of the "BRITISH COMMONWEALTH" not part of BRITAIN.

look up what COMMONWEALTH MEANS, then you can talk...
