ok so here's the deal. I've got a debate topic on censorship comin up that I have to be prepared for. I have lots of information, but I'm looking for more usable information instead of little tidbits (which is lots of what I have). I'm on the negative side, thus I'm against censorship. If anyone has any information that would be great!

maybe I've misunderstood something...Can you explain to me how the first amendment comes into play with censorship?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I understand the freedom of speech bit and how that might come into play...but not quite the rest. Thanks for explaining :)

Censorship tramples all over the first amendment. The ACLU fights against the FCC (as well as other government entities) to defend the Constitutional rights of Americans. http://www.aclu.org is probably a good place to look.

Censorship involves the First Amendment only if we are speaking of GOVERNMENT censorship. In that case, the Constitution theoretically protects the right to free expression, realizing that the success of a democratically-oriented republic hinges upon it. So the case against censorship is that inhibiting free expression hinders the free exchange of ideas, and thus impedes the growth of our civilization. Creativity is the driving force behind commerce, which is what supports society. Limiting it thus harms the market, and in turn weakens us.
