I've heard this so many times that you don't have to go to a class in college/university.  Is this serious? If you don't go, you'll fail.  For one, you'll be behind with assignments and lectures.  Second, some classes do consider attendance marks.  At least for me. I had three big classes that i could not afford to miss under any circumstances.  Couldn't be late either or else, marks be taken off.  Had to show up every class or i'll be left behind.
I don't know about other programs so maybe you can slack off and not go to class and just copy off notes from your classmates. But i am surprised attendance doesn't matter in other programs.  Either way, why would you not go to class if you paid thousands of dollors?

In the UK, lectures simply aren't compulsory. You do not HAVE to go to them at all, and they're not really necessary to pass, either.

The point is that, being an adult, many colleges expect YOU to take the responsibility of making sure you are there.

None of my classes had required attendance. Some times I would have things that I considered more important to do, so I would skip class. It is up to you to get the material and make sure that you are not missing a class that has work due.

As an adult, you are capable of making your own responsible decisions, it shouldn't be up to the school to do that for you.

Not really. Once you reach college or university, you're paying to be there so the lecturers really don't care whether you go or not. It's your own money you're wasting by not going.

ummm.. in a way you're paying for classes but you're mostly paying for a degree.

for most classes in college, the majority of your grade is tests. if you skip all the other days (lectures/note-taking), you can sit around and do whatever and, because most professors put every day's worth of classes in note form online, you can use that and still learn the material while doing whatever you want instead of sitting in a boring lecture hall.

just make sure you show up for the test days!

Here's the kicker, though. You're still paying for it either way.

Nah, you're paying for the qualification you get at the end of your degree course.

You still have to pay to attend the class and if the lecture is part of the class....

I don't see it like that. I'm paying to get my education. Lectures are not a compulsory part of that. They give me a general overview of various subjects, but I don't have to attend lectures to get that over-view.
