Borderline Personality Disorder has been around since the 60's.  It's not a 'catch-all label for a lot of emotional problems either'. It has specific symptoms.

It's pretty broad and encompasses a lot of other typical emotional disorders. It's been around for awhile, but the main usage has been much more recent
