Southern accents in class, stereotypes?

The other day, all of the girls in my class decided that we'd speak with southern accents for the rest of the day. We raised our hands in class and spoke that way; we had conversations amongst ourselves that way, and we shared our work that we wrote that way.

My teacher had the whole class do this discussion on our exact mindsets we had while we were doing this. He thought we were feeling both creative and narrow minded because we were exhibiting stereotypes about how southern people spoke and acted.

And right then, we all stopped. No discussion, we just stopped doing it. And we never spoke of it again. We felt really bad.

Was what we were doing bad?

Are you serious? Hardly. I've lived in the South my entire life, and I have a Northern accent if any. Most people I know who were born in the South don't have an accent.

Rednecks have the Southern accents, not all of us. Case and point, these redneck Junior kids who call themselves "The Dixie Fellers".

Alright, not all of you. I may just be remembering the bad examples from when I went on a road trip through the south.

I asked one man where the book store is and I couldn't understand a word he said.
