How many recommendations do you need?

About how many teacher recommendations for applying to college would you recommend? I'm applying to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, planning on becoming an English teacher. I have a 3.6 GPA and a 27 on my ACT.

So far I have three planned. The first would come from my math teacher; she taught me my sophomore year and now again my first semester of my senior year. I'm horrible at math but I'm pulling a B+ in her class, and she knows I'm a hard worker and likes me a lot (always saying hi to me in the halls, offering to help me after school whenever, etc) and, here's the kicker, she went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. So she's my first recommendation.

The second is my English teacher. She taught me in honors English in my junior year and I pulled an A in there, and she's teaching me again senior year in AP English this year. She's asked to keep a few of my papers and has written comments on past papers saying that I'm a natural writer, etc. She also says hi to me in the halls and stuff, plus she's in my major so I think she'll be a strong rec for me.

The last one I have is my student leadership advisor. She taught me my junior year in my Child Development class, and wrote on my report card that I was a joy to have in class and a leader. She's told me before that she thinks I'm a really good person, and that my writing is fun to read. Now this year, she's the advisor of my student leadership program so I think she'll also give me a glowing review.

So, based on this, how strong are my recs? Do I need more? How many did you have? Thanks.

I didn't send any letters of recommendation when I applied to college.

But, if you're going to send some, or if the school requires them, send three.  That's the standard number, I think.

Edited to add that I dont' think you'll have any trouble getting in. Your GPA is good, decent to good ACT scores, and the fact that your AP classes will show up on your transcript will help a lot. They may not even look at your letters of recommendation.

Most people get two.  Generally schools release guidelines about how many they want.  Any school that uses CommonApp and doesn't say probably wants two.

Oi.  I'm from Madison and like half my high school went there.  From what I've heard, the standard number is two.  I think your GPA is fine for getting in but the ACT is a little low.

If you get some recommendations from both teachers and people outside the academic field, it will probably help you out.  I would say 2-3 should be fine.  No need to overdo it.  They won't have time to read like 10 recommendations.

Look at what the college specifically asks for.... and if you're applying to a certain program, looks there also.

For example, USC asks for one. But their film program asks for 3 additional ones.
