Do not confuse "sueing" someone with actually winning a case.

It is, in fact a truism that you can "sue for anything", however, winning the case is a completly different matter.

And I should think that, should the facts be as you presented them here, No judge in his right mind would find in favour of the plantiff.

Say a senior basketball player goes out and gets drunk one night, and happens to be passing this old man's house. The teen knows he could get some money from him, so he breaks in to try and steal a few things. The old man is awake, and the teen decides to try and knock him out, but the old man has a gun and shoots him in the leg. After a month of recovery, the young senior sues the old man for taking away his future basketball career. Is this right? Stuff like this is actually happening every day, especially in the United States. What the hell is wrong with this world today?

Why would you be held liable? If someone breaks into your house you can only assume that they are hostile and wish to harm you and thus you have the right to defend yourself.
