So I just found out I got accepted for a position at UPS. It's preloading so it's not glamorous and it's really early in the morning, but it pays okay for a part-time job and it gives me something to do while I wait for basic training. Anybody else work at UPS?

I know people who do. I kind of do, but not technically, if that makes any sense to you.

ive heard UPS workers are really happy with their jobs. I think it was because everyone is so excited to see them (you know when you finally get a package?)

one guy even was driven to his burial during his funereal in his UPS truck instead of a hearse.

At least you'll have the rest of your day to do whatever. And it doesn't seem to hard.

When do you leave for basic? And what are job field are you going in for?

It's grunt work, but tedious. You have to lift some pretty heavy packages and move at a quick pace for 4-5 hrs straight. They say it's great work to get in shape. I figure it will be so monotonous that time will go by really fast.

I have yet to learn what AFSC I will get, but my top 5 picks are in intelligence and operations. I'm in DEP awaiting my job right now, so it could be a month or it could be almost a year before I go to basic, but it seems to be taking about 3-4 months to get jobs these days. I put UAV controller as my second pick, and it being a brand new job as of October, I'm expecting they will put me in that slot fairly quick. I'm estimating another 3 months before I ship.

Good thing about working with UPS is that your job is basically safe when you go off into the military.

while this company may be military friendly, job security is a legal obligation that employers must provide. An Employer could get into HUGE issues if they dont. [see pepboys  lawsuit in ref to Afghanistan invasion and firing reservists who got called up for active duty]

I'm aware of that, but UPS is one of the main companies known for it. They're rather good with dealing with it instead of giving their employees a hard time over it.

Yea, it can take a while. My boyfriend is on basic right now, he's going to be an MP, and he had to wait about 6 months before he could go.

MP huh? Wow, I heard that can be really stressful for couples. On call 24/7, working holidays and weekends...Are you going to get married after his tech school or are you doing things long distance?

We plan to get married, probably when he comes home on leave, after AIT. We haven't really discussed details. He sent me a very emotional letter and asked me if I would marry him.
