Is there really any disadvantage? I'm not the type who would want to see my family every long weekend... distance makes the heart grow fonder, anyways. It's not even that I'm trying to get away... it's just that I feel like being somewhere totally new and separate gives me even more space to define myself. Plus, I would be going to the sunny south, basking in more sunlight than my family up north. My dad was like, "Why would you want to go that far away?" True, we have great schools up here, but there are a few down south that catch my eye. Some of my friends are freshmen at Vandy, Tulane, Emory etc. this year and it made me realize that I could do that too without a problem, and transportation costs are fortunately not an issue for my family.
I did a "program" at a college a plane ride away from home this summer and I actually loved the feeling of being in somewhere so incredibly new geographically. It wasn't a negative experience, not that staying close to home would kill me either.
Thoughts? Do any of you go to college far away, and if so how do you feel about it?
