Okay, please be brutally honest here.

How bad of a SAT score is 1700? I'm an 11th grader. I know it depends on the school, but in general?
(The test is out of 2400 -.-)

I'm a terrible standardized test taker for math. When I see that section, I just freak out. My reading and writing scores are steadily improving, but my math score just won't budge. (And you can only imagine how bad it is, considering my overall score.) I'm taking a class that is supposed to raise your score through lots of practice test and strategies, but I feel like I'm a lost cause here.

My GPA is around a 3.7, and I have good extracurriculars. But I'm really worried about this score.

How can I improve? Any tips? please?

LOL, I had the exact same GPA and did almost as bad on the SATs too. I got accepted to the colleges I applied to.

I think it's above the average. Most of my friends have gotten above 1900.

Really the best you can do is review some math and do lots of practice tests to the point where you can begin to see a pattern and to where the tests are predictable.

Or opt for the ACT instead. lol

What kind of schools did you apply to? What was the rigor of your highschool and course load?

I'm thinking about taking the ACT, yeah.

Speaking of which, does anyone know how it's different from the SAT?

I think you would do better on it. The math section plays less of a role because instead of being 1/3 of the test like on the SAT, it is 1/4 of the test on the ACT. Also, the questions are really straightforward...not as tricky as SAT math.

I do a bit better on the ACT. I got a 30 last time. It's because it doesn't test your vocab on the reading or English sections like on the SAT. There aren't any sentence completions, thank god. lol Sentence completions kill my SAT score every time.

Hm, maybe I will try it. I do think the hardest part of SAT math is trying to figure out what the question is asking. Which is so crappy!

I applied to 4 state universities. I took Honors English and Spanish 3 years, and AP English, Spanish, Psychology, and Environmental Science my senior year. I took B level math classes and didn't even take math my senior year. I didn't really participate in extracurriculars until college. I ended up going to community college on a full scholarship and now I'm a junior in college, going to one of the universities I applied to in high school.

That score won't get you into any of the top 50, but should be fine for state schools.
