So I can impress his parents.

He's Chinese, and his parents and him speak the language at home.
Honestly, I don't want to learn a second language. I also heard it's hard.

But, I care about him, and want to make him happy.

You can put some effort into it, and if you're with him long enough and pay attention  you might pick up a little anyway.

you could always just learn a few words like "hello", "goodbye", "please" and "thank you".

it'd be a nice gesture, without going to the lengths of learning a whole new language. which is a bit of a silly request, tbh.

It wouldn't be so bad to learn a couple phrases and words. Maybe you can do that to judge how hard it would be for you to undertake actually learning the language. But overall, it's nice to want to learn it, even if it's just a little.

Just what I was going to say.

Learning an entire language is a massive commitment. Taking an interest in it and learning basic nice phrases (what Fauna said, plus maybe stuff like 'how are you', 'please pass the salt'...) isn't, and it'll still make you look as if you're making an effort.

I'm learning my boyfriend's native language so I could speak with my future in-laws. What's the big deal? Have some respect and interest for his culture! And his home language is a very important part of it all.
Give it a try, it might turn out fun! Good luck!

learning chinese is quite a big deal. I don't think that not wanting to learn chinese shows a lack of respect for his culture.

I have a whole lot of respect for his culture. It's just that right now is really not a good time for me, and I suck at learning languages. I know that I'll just end up embarrassing myself in front of his parents.

But I believe they'd surely appreciate smallest attempt of trying to learn anything. You don't have to become fluent but learning some basic things would already be something. I know Chinese is a real ax (ax means something really difficult in Estonian slang).
