Each shell has 8 electrons, after the second shell.

It's been a few years since Chemistry... but I do remember that being correct.

Wait. Oy...

Isn't this right?

The only thing is that the 3rd shell cannot go below 8 electrons...?

I found this as it might be useful for the OP since I'm not exactly the right person to ask about this... :S

The max numbers are 2, 8, 18, 32, 50. The last paragraph explains why the third shell may sometimes be thought to hold 8.

There is a definite arrangement of the electrons in these shells and a maximum number of electrons possible in each shell.

The most electrons possible in the first shell are 2. After the first shell is filled, the second shell starts filling up, according to the number of positive charges in the nucleus. The most allowed in the second shell is 8 electrons. Then the third shell starts to fill.

After the second orbit or shell is filled, things start to get complicated. The third shell fills until it gets to 8, and then the fourth shell starts adding electrons until it too has 8 electrons. Then the third shell fills until it gets to 18.

I don't think it's possible to understand this.  There is no clear explanation in existence.  Your chemistry/physics book will tell you the answer is either 2,8,8,8,8. . . or 2, {some odd geometric sequence}, or BOTH, separated by a few chapters, like mine.  Your book will never connect the two concepts together.

Instead, you will learn about orbital notation--but you'll never understand the significance of it.  Ever.  No one does.  Your teacher doesn't, none of the Nobel prize winning physicists or chemists do--no one. If you ask about the 2,8,8,8 vs 2, geometric sequence, all the students in your class will move to the edges of their seats in anticipation, but suddenly there will be a confused look on your teacher's face and he or she will change the subject.

There will be a mention of valence elections. If you want to find out how many valence electrons an atom has, take its atomic number, subtract two, divide by eight--the remainder is valence. Sometimes.
