I don't think it's possible to understand this. There is no clear explanation in existence. Your chemistry/physics book will tell you the answer is either 2,8,8,8,8. . . or 2, {some odd geometric sequence}, or BOTH, separated by a few chapters, like mine. Your book will never connect the two concepts together. Instead, you will learn about orbital notation--but you'll never understand the significance of it. Ever. No one does. Your teacher doesn't, none of the Nobel prize winning physicists or chemists do--no one. If you ask about the 2,8,8,8 vs 2, geometric sequence, all the students in your class will move to the edges of their seats in anticipation, but suddenly there will be a confused look on your teacher's face and he or she will change the subject. There will be a mention of valence elections. If you want to find out how many valence electrons an atom has, take its atomic number, subtract two, divide by eight--the remainder is valence.
