Do you think that blind social obedience is a good thing? I was on the train today and economy was packed to the brim whereas there was no-one in first class.
I was tired so rather than standing by the door I went to sit in the first class part of the train.
I sat there for half the journey and when the ticket conducted came round I challenged him about the sense of having people sitting on the floor and on the side of other passengers chairs (which is a hazard) while seats are left empty. He pretty much agreed with me and let me stay in first class.
So I got a free upgraded seat just for using my initiative and a bit of cheek. People in economy class were packed in like sardines, like you would expect on the London underground.. yet they all obeyed social conformity and stayed where they were, in clear view of empty seats.
Is it good that I used my initiative and sat down or not?
