I was told by a reliable source that if you fear someone is going to commit suicide, you can call a number and get them involuntarily committed to a hospital and put on suicide watch. No attempts necessary, just if you think so.

What the fuck. Is it true?

And if so, just in the US or other countries as well?

No you would need to get a court order if they're over eighteen.

And if they're not you'd need to be their legal guardian and get a doctor to agree that it's necessary.

I think in California, at least last I've heard, this was possible. The 5050 law, or something. I'm not sure if it's still active, but it's fairly easy to get a minor committed. Especially since they tend to err on the side of 'safety' even if it means violating someone's civil rights...

thats stupid. if some1 has a gun cocked to their head or is standing on the edge of a tall building, ur hardly gonna have time for a court order.

No, what you're stating is not true, There are provisions for having people committed for evaluation, but it's not like someone can just call up and says so and so is suicidal, and get them committed.

You can where I am. Well, it's a bit complicated...

Where I am you'll be committed if they have high reason to believe you will cause harm to yourself or others. My dad has attempted suicide multiple times so, because of that, if we called and said we thought he was going to kill himself, they'd probably make us bring him in or something like that and they'd keep him.

I would assume it would be very circumstantial though, and we definitely couldn't just call and have him committed easily (I've checked that out). It would involve getting him to a hospital/ getting the police out to take him.

You sure can. If you confess to a doctor your suicidal intent or if you say or do anything that would make them consider you a hazard to yourself, then you'd end up in hospital having to talk to psych's. However, if you can convince them you're not a major risk, they might let you go home.
