Because of the state of the economy, and the fact that my top college costs $50,000 per year, my mom thought it would be a good idea for me to apply to the University of Kansas (which is much closer and much cheaper). So today I went there and took a tour. I don't know how I would have felt about it had I not already visited four very prestigious colleges, plus an Ivy League. Perhaps I would have liked it better if I had nothing to compare it to. Anyway, when I was touring the campus, we had a tour guide who basically ignored me. There were four senior girls in the group, including me, and the guide asked the other three various questions like what they wanted to major in, but he didn't ask me. I know he saw me, his eyes glanced right over me without any form of acknowledgement. Later on, I was talking quietly to my mom about how KU measured up to some of the other schools I visited, and he gave me this look that said, "You think you're too good for us, don't you?" Maybe I did come off as a bit arrogant, because I was kind of bitter about the whole thing to begin with. I've grown up with KU, and while for some, that would seem like the natural choice, but that's the very thing I want to get away from. The majority of people in my graduating class will ultimately go there, but I want to get far away from everyone I know and begin anew in a new place, you know? Sure, I could go for the easy, safe choice, the college that I'm guaranteed to get into. But where's the challenge in that? Where's the adventure?

I agree completely. I would go to a more challenging college, despite the cost. What university are you looking to get into?

I know that's a tough choice... I mean, wanting to go farther away? It really does seem ideal. You should really talk to your mom about it, but 50,000 per year is ALOT of money. I mean... as soon as you leave your state, you are going to have to pay more... because either then you go to a private school, which naturally have a high tuition, or you go to a state school, which will tack on out of state fees. So I mean... really think about it. Don't let a tour guide that was an ass make you think badly of the school. Talk to your mom about it, see what you get for financial aid, talk to a financial counsellor and see how the drop in the economy may affect your ability to take out loans in the future... Think about it, talk about it... I know it's hard, because I would feel the exact same way as you, but financial stress can really take it's toll on you, and you may very well find yourself in a 50,000 dollar college, and feeling guilty about it. I hope it works out for you... you can always make a transfer if you really want... but it's something really worth talking about with your mom and seeing what your status is financially, and what your options are.

I just finished my scholarship essay for KU. ha. Ironic. I love the school, and I love Lawrence (But NOT all the roadwork. ick.). I went to "Senior Days" on the 13th... and was thoroughly unimpressed. So I asked some friends of mine that attend KU to show me the reality of it. I went back on Friday and was much more pleased. KU may just not be the school for you, but if your only experience is a Senior Days event or something similar, you may want to reconsider. The student ambassadors were jerks and the one I had didn't even know what she was talking about, but everyone else was super nice. Maybe I'm just a bit defensive because I'll probably end up there (Even if it is mostly due to the fact that my parents are begging me to stay in state.). haha.
