for those of you who attend church. does your church have adequate facilities for members with physical/mental disabilities?

it has been my experience that most churches are under equipped to deal with people who might have special needs.

thoughts? comments?

My church has ramps and such.  They don't have the buttons to press to open up doors.  But I think they do enough.  They even have the handicapped parking signs.  Such an old church with new stuff.  It amazes me.

I remember whenever Westover Hills Church of Christ would have sign language alongside the sermon via the monitors.

Seriously, my church discriminates against the mentally disabled, even me and I'm higher-functioning. It pisses me off

I have been told by several doctors that I cannot become active in ministry due to my various diseases and disabilities.  I'd have to agree with them by asking if a church would really want person with a relapseable disease that removes my ability to walk or properly function without significant pain or my moderate/severe Generalized Anxiety coupled with OCD and Obsessive tendencies?

the physical disabilities should in no way impair you. you can be a minister in a wheelchair if it should come to that.

the other things should probably be taken under advisement, although i know people here in seminary with me who have a variety of disabilities/disorders etc...

the girl who lives down the hall from me is on lithium for bipolar disorder...and she is an MDiv who got cleared by a candidacy committee...

it is totally possible to overcome it.

Unfortunately whenever my disease relapses, I'd argue that it'd be too disturbing for members of the congregation not aware of the severity to witness.  As for my anxiety, depression and OCD coupled with Obsessive tendencies, you've known me IRL... you tell me.
